Stary Teatr

On the corner of the square, at the junction with ul. Jagiellońska, you’ll come across Stary Teatr 6 [map] (Old Theatre; ul. Jagiellońska 5; www.stary.pl), the city’s – and Poland’s – oldest public theatre, established in 1799 by the renowned actor Mateusz Witkowski. In its mid-nineteenth-century heyday, Helena Modrzejewska starred here before treading the boards in Warsaw and the US. In more modern times, plays here have been directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Andrzej Wajda – of Katyn (2007) and The Promised Land (1975) fame. The theatre was refashioned with wonderful Secessionist details in 1903 by the architects Franciszek Mączyński and Tadeusz Stryjeński, members of the Młoda Polska movement. After suffering several setbacks in the last century, it is beautifully restored and again a vibrant part of Kraków’s cultural life.
